Human Subjects Research For the Twenty-First Century, Or, What Can We Learn from the Facebook Mood Study?

There is tremendous value to society in doing large-scale A/B studies, and the current framework we have for human subjects research is a poor match for the 21st century. Furthermore, the Facebook mood study is just one of many examples of challenges we as a community will face in the future as increasingly powerful tools for understanding and influencing human behavior are developed and deployed. How can we make sure that these studies are done ethically, in a way that offers substantive protections to people, and in a manner that scales?

Shape the Future of Computing

ACM encourages its members to take a direct hand in shaping the future of the association. There are more ways than ever to get involved.

Get Involved

Communications of the ACM (CACM) is now a fully Open Access publication.

By opening CACM to the world, we hope to increase engagement among the broader computer science community and encourage non-members to discover the rich resources ACM has to offer.
