Welcome to the special section highlighting cutting-edge research and innovation emerging from East Asia and Oceania. Our region encompasses Southeast Asia, Oceania, and Asia-Pacific countries, including Japan and Korea. The articles in this section—designated as "Hot Topics" and "Big Trends"—aim to not only showcase technological advancements from this region, but also to strengthen research collaboration and communication with regions worldwide.

This special section brings together some of the most innovative research in computer science and technology from this flourishing region. The articles cover a wide range of topics, from state-of-the-art developments in learning analytics, AI and machine learning, education, Big Data, neuromorphic computing, and blockchain technology, to applications in disease prediction and assistive devices. They demonstrate the groundbreaking work being done to push the boundaries of our understanding and capabilities in these fields.

This special section also includes many nationwide and major cross-institutional collaborative works, including Australian efforts tackling misinformation and operationalizing responsible AI at scale, South Korea's nationwide endeavors in the AI semiconductor industry, a Japan-wide undertaking to establish highspeed, high-density, and highly secure networks across the nation, as well as Japan's Society 5.0 progress for exhibition in Osaka in 2025, New Zealand's work addressing veracity grand challenges, and a pioneering effort by a Vietnamese startup to nurture AI development in that region. There are also a wide array of country- and culture-specific technical challenges and developments discussed in these articles, such as those in manufacturing and fabrication. Get ready to be inspired and amazed by the array of topics that have the potential to shape our future in exciting and meaningful ways.

To create this special section, we organized a virtual workshop on October 28, 2022, and launched an open call for contributions. The workshop concluded with the selection of articles for this special section, which consists of four "Big Trends" articles and 15 "Hot Topics."

We extend our gratitude to the speakers at the workshop and all the authors who contributed to this special section.
