The Importance of STEM Education Goes Beyond Building a Workforce

Cornelia Connolly is a lecturer at the School of Education, National University of Ireland, Galway. Her teaching and research interests center on STEM teacher education.

While completing a master's of engineering at the University of Limerick, Cornelia Connolly found she was the only woman postgraduate in the entire department, an experience that spurred a drive for diversity in STEM through education that is visible throughout her work. In an interview, she discusses why she became a researcher, current projects, creating a sustainable digital educational future, and improving diversity and creating opportunities in STEM education.

"Diversity is a fact of nature and society, but it's often ignored in the design of software and it's a large issue in the computing and technology sector," she says. "Computing and automation can actually work great for the normal, typical, and average cases, but diversity guarantees that it also functions well for atypical or less common situations."
