Researchers Generate Compelling Results on Tacc's Visualization Cluster

The 'Longhorn' hardware-accelerated cluster is providing researchers with unprecedented visualization capabilities and enabling them to effectively analyze ever-growing volumes of data.

The Texas Advanced Computing Center's (TACC's) hardware-accelerated interactive visualization cluster, called Longhorn, is providing researchers with new visualization capabilities and enabling them to analyze large volumes of data. "We're committed to providing excellent user support and effective training to enable transformative science on this resource," says TACC's Kelly Gaither.

University of Utah researcher Thomas Fogal is using Longhorn to study volume rendering, a technique that enables researchers to understand three-dimensional structures using two-dimensional images. Temple University's David LeBard is using Longhorn to study electron transfer in proteins to develop a better understanding of the physical properties at work in photosynthesis and metabolism.

The TACC team also developed the Longhorn Visualization Portal to help users visualize their data and view the allocations. "The portal is designed to lower barriers to entry and serves as a means for outreach to those communities that do not have significant experience using visualization tools," Gaither says.
