Sfu Develops Super Sensor Devices

Simon Fraser University's (SFU's) Center for Integrative Bio-Engineering Research (CiBER) continues to improve its next-generation wireless sensor technology. Three years after unveiling a wearable wireless cardiac monitoring and diagnostic sensor embedded in a polymer-based bandage, CiBER's sensors now offer secure document storage and transmission. "They can be used to track and detect the identity of objects and people," says SFU professor Bozena Kaminska.

The sensors have health, athletic, security, and energy monitoring applications. They communicate over a solar-powered, wireless mesh network connected to the Internet, which was built by CiBER.

The National Research Council in Ottawa is using CiBER's technology in sensor-based wireless applications for smart homes and to save energy, and health care facilities are testing the sensors and network for medical purposes.
