Harvard University researchers have shown that acoustic waves can be controlled and modulated with an electric field on chip.

The researchers developed an on-chip electro-acoustic modulator using lithium niobate.

The modulator can control the phase, amplitude, and frequency of acoustic waves on chip by applying an electric field, moving a step closer to building an acoustic integrated circuit.

Said researcher Linbo Shao, "Our work paves the way for high-performance acoustic-wave based devices and circuits for next-generation microwave signal processing, as well as on-chip quantum networks and interfaces linking different types of quantum systems, including solid-state atomic systems and superconducting qubits."
