Using AI to Prevent Blood Clots, Strokes

A team of researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Harvard University's Broad Institute has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) technique to identify possible atrial fibrillation, which can lead to blood clots and strokes.

The technique can forecast atrial fibrillation within five years based on electrocardiograms from 45,770 patients.

The team analyzed three datasets involving a total of 83,162 individuals; the AI method predicted atrial fibrillation risk, and showed synergy in combination with known clinical risk factors for predicting the condition.

MGH's Steven A. Lubitz said the algorithm could function as a pre-screening tool for patients who may be suffering undetected atrial fibrillation.
