University of Minnesota Develops Tool to Help Farmers Make Crop Input Decisions

A new tool developed by a University of Minnesota research team allows farmers to create a budget balance sheet for nitrogen reduction plans and see the economic and environmental cost, returns, and margins, all customized to fields under their management.

Farmers can formulate a budget balance sheet of any nitrogen reduction plans and view customized economic and environmental impacts and benefits of the fields they plant through a new tool developed by University of Minnesota (UMn) researchers.

The team assembled an array of machine learning-based metamodels that emulate a well-tested crop model almost perfectly, and at faster speeds.

From these metamodels, researchers produced millions of management scenario simulations and explored the location of mitigation hotspots, as well as the level of expected mitigation the scenarios would yield.

UMn's Timothy Smith said, "By providing key sustainability indicators related to upstream crop production, our metamodels can be a useful tool for food companies to quantify the emissions in their supply chain and distinguish mitigation options for setting sustainability goals."
