Facebook has open-sourced a new software framework to simplify robotic programming.

The PyRobot framework enables roboticists to write a basic code in Python to govern a robot, which the Robot Operating System platform translates into more complex commands.

Said Facebook AI researcher Abhinav Gupta, "The idea is the whole pipeline of doing grasping is only a few lines of code. That's what makes it easier for a computer-vision or machine learning researcher."

PyRobot also is designed to be compatible with various robots, and Gupta thinks the framework could be a useful tool for scaling up robots' ability to learn common-sense knowledge via physical-world interaction.
