OSU Researchers Develop Better Way to Determine Coastal Flooding Risk

A new computer-model assembly technique invented by researchers at Oregon State University could lead to better insights into coastal flood risks.

Oregon State University (OSU) researchers have invented a new computer-model assembly technique, which could lead to better insights into coastal flood risks.

The model applied "emulation" and statistical methods, rather than direct replication, of the various physical forces contributing to estuary flooding.

Former OSU researcher Kai Parker said, "The key question we wanted to answer in this study is, 'is there a better way to handle long simulation times for computationally expensive flooding models?'"

Parker added that "Once the statistical model, or emulator, is built—once we create a training dataset and train the emulator—additional use of it comes at essentially zero cost. It's nearly instantaneous."
