Scientists in Mexico Scramble to Deploy Seismic Sensors

Rescue workers searched for people trapped inside a collapsed building after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Mexico City on Sept. 19. Earthquakes are notoriously difficult to predict, but a network of seismic sensors analyzing tectonic plate movement on the sea floor may improve emergency preparedness.

Late one night in September, Victor Cruz, a geophysicist at Mexico's National Autonomous University, submitted an article to a scientific journal describing progress on a network of underwater seismic sensors to be deployed off Mexico's Pacific coast.
