Mr. Hutchinson's family photographs. Through the genetic testing service 23andMe, Mr. Hutchinson learned that his mother had a brother and a sister, and a genealogist helped him track down some first cousins in Alabama, who said they had been told never to contact Mr. Hutchinson or his family.

Bob Hutchinson's mother told him and his siblings almost nothing about her family, no matter how often they asked. "She was good at brushing people off," said Mr. Hutchinson, 60.
