Warrantless Phone Tapping, Email Spying Inching to Supreme Court Review

Whistleblower Mark Klein took this now 8-year-old photo of a secret room in a San Francisco AT&T switching center. Klein alleges the facility houses data-mining equipment enabling U.S. agents access to electronic communications. His photo and other documents he obtained while a telco contractor prompted ongoing Fourth Amendment litigation.

In 2013, the Supreme Court rejected a challenge to a once-clandestine warrantless surveillance program that gobbles up Americans' electronic communications—a project secretly adopted in the wake of the 2001 terror attacks on the United States.
