Excellent article. We are doing something very similar at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). Take a look at these two projects (1) Data Analysis Workbench ( - an Eclipse/RCP workbench and workflow tool, and (2) EDNA ( a Python based framework for wrapping analysis packages.
