During the current technology boom, many of the hot new job titles are based around areas such as Big Data and business intelligence that combine technology with business strategy. In fact, the job title with the highest increase in total compensation in Computerworld's 2013 IT Salary Survey is business intelligence analyst. That job saw an average salary increase of 3.9% and an average bonus increase of 3.5%, compared to overall average increases of 2.3% for salaries and 0.9% for bonuses. Going forward, IT organizations will be on the lookout for individuals with business breadth and tech depth and who can address market challenges, not just solve computing problems.

One of the hottest IT titles right now is Director of IT Infrastructure, a position that's responsible for bringing consistency of process and a higher level of service to the organization. An IT infrastructure director, for example, might advise the CIO on which networking and cloud-based technologies to invest in to bolster the company's growth plan. Another hot title now is Chief Knowledge Officer, a role that works closely with the CIO but reports directly to the CEO. The CKO should be someone who understands how to cooperate with outside entities and then can help a company deploy that knowledge in all parts of the organization.

Also garnering attention is the Application Business Analyst, a new midlevel position that works with business teams on current and future processes, looking at what off-the-shelf software packages are available and making sure what's chosen meets functional and business needs. The application business analyst bridges the gap between IT and functional units, a combination of business analyst and project manager. Another job growing in significance is the Technology Solutions Engineer, a person who understands how business solutions need to be part of any IT problem-solving process. Overall, these hybrid IT job titles are a reflection of the larger shift that's taking place across the tech sector.
