Silk Moves from Textiles to Technology

Constituted of pure silk, this card was created by pouring a silk solution on nanopatterned molds and letting it crystallize. The resulting film is a free-standing optical component so flexible it can be rolled up. Credit: Fiorenzo Omenetto / Tufts University

Synonymous with beauty, silk is a masterpiece of nature with amazing mechanical properties that support its use in a growing number of high-tech applications ranging from medical devices to electronics.
