Aston University researchers are investigating the possibilities of next-generation cloud computing technologies for large scale and complex information technology systems. The researchers have developed a new Internet-accessible service that enables information to be stored in a cloud by remote and large scale data centers, with users and organizations able to access specific cloud services as needed.

The researchers also are investigating theories and methods that will enable users to assess the reliability, service quality, and toolkits for business users. Pricing, resources, service speed, and social, environmental, and the technical implications of developing cloud technologies also are being examined. "One vision is to see 'cloud computing' as the next major utility service such as gas and electricity, with perhaps a number of very large companies providing online services," says Aston's Radu Calinescu.
