Cineca, the leading Italian high-performance computing (HPC) consortium, manages a supercomputing resource hub to advance innovations in scientific computing, Web and networking-based services, big data management, visualization, and other technologies.

Cineca's HPC investment is distributed via the centralized hub accessible to numerous academic, industrial, and scientific sectors throughout Italy and Europe.

Cineca employs three supercomputers based on the Intel Scalable System Framework, including a 2-petaflop system, an 11-petaflop system, and a third configuration expected to run at about 20 petaflops.

One area in which Cineca plays an important role is European energy projects, and the nonprofit consortium is researching and modeling fusion reactors in one initiative.

Cineca's HPC tools also are being used for amassing environmental data and rapidly analyzing weather systems.

In addition, Cineca's resources are being applied to several medication applications, including the secure management of clinical trials.
